The Duros S3590 is a bagged canister vacuum cleaner of Hoover. It is less expensive that the average competition, but maintains reasonably good performances.

Hoover Duros S3590 – Accessories

  • Power nozzle
  • Round swivel brush
  • Dusting brush
  • Crevice tool

The power nozzle contains a rotating brush. Its cleaning path is 14 inches wide. There are headlights on the front. The brush agitator (and headlights) can be switched on or off from controls on the wand. A pedal on the power nozzle can also be used to switch between the “Rug” and “Hard floor” settings. For hard floors there is suction but no agitator action.

The round swivel brush and dusting brush can be stored on the extension wand, while the crevice tool can be stored inside the canister, in an on-board compartment.

The Duros S3590 doesn’t have any advanced filter, but uses allergen filtration bags (reference 401010SR) which are supposed to improve the level of filtration for small particles. There is also a water washable secondary filter before the motor, and a another water washable filter after the motor and before the exhaust. Both are permanent and shouldn’t need to be replaced.

Pros :

  • The suction is good on rugs and carpets. It is average on hard floors.
  • The suction force can be adjusted from a power selector on the the canister.
  • The swivel hose can rotate at 360° to increase the maneuverability of the canister.
  • An indicator warns you when the dust bag is full.
  • Automatic cord retraction.

Cons :

  • The Duros S3590 is noisy.
  • The two attachment tools stored on the wand can fall if you bump into something.
  • The power cord is too short, which is a problem if you have large rooms.
  • No hard floor attachment. Even if the power head can be used on these floors (after turning off the brush agitator), it is heavier and not as practical.

Customer reviews

I needed an inexpensive canister vacuum for my summer house. This little Hoover is a price performer. It is rather loud especially in enclosed areas such as closets, but the noise is evidently a byproduct of it’s power. Tons of suction and a pretty useful beater bar. You can easily switch from beater to straight suction with a touch of the toe. The tools are adequate, though small, again directing more powerful suction. The provided storage of the tools on the handle though does not work. The tools are always falling off and are in the way.
This vacuum is great when it is new – powerful suction and great flexibility, switching easily from wood floors, tile and carpet. The tool storage on the handle is not very convenient, but that is not a deal breaker. My mother and I each bought a Duros canister vacuum 2 years ago. Her Duros died after one year, when the hose coupling broke and the repair shop told her not to bother fixing it. Mine is still working decently, (after my awesome husband, who likes to edit my reviews, did a complete tear-down looking for intermittent power loss only to replace the shorting wall plug) but the suction quality has declined appreciably and the noise has increased appreciably. It’s just not as great anymore.
For the price, it is isn’t a bad purchase, but I would not buy this vacuum again.

Our advice :

The Hoover Duros S3590 is cheap and reasonably efficient.  It’s a good choice if you have a limited budget, small rooms, and are aware that the performances and accessories won’t be as good as more expensive vacuum cleaners. Overall, you will probably find a better value for your money somewhere else.

Is there a way to clean the interior of my Duros? I accidentally vacuumed up mouse feces and do not want to use my vacuum cleaner until I know it’s clean and not spewing old dust out. When I ran it in the past there seemed to be a weird smell. I would appreciate a quick response as my floors are desperate for a sweep! = )

      Hi Kimberly,

The main places which keep smell in the vacuuum cleaner are the bag, and the filters.

I assume you already replaced the bag, so before you try anything else, you should try to clean (under water) the two permanent filters. Make sure to wait until they are completely dry to put them back.

      Best regards,

After searching for an hour or so I finally found the lid latch part that holds the lid closed where the bag goes in. However, I cannot figure out how to put it on and apparently this is a part they no longer make but I found a new one at Sears warehouse. I can get one of the little tips on the side to go in but cannot get the other one in place. I can’t figure out where to put the spring in either. I am 73 years old and I love the sweeper but cant figure out how to fix it. HELP!!!!!!

      Hi Carolyn,

When putting a new bag, the rigid part of the bag should slide right between two slots toward the front of the vacuum cleaner. The lid can then be closed when the bag is in the correct position. There shouldn’t be a need for an additional part.

      Best regards,

the beater bar stopped turning. There was a string around it, which I got off but it still won’t turn.
what can I do to fix it?

I like this unit a lot, and have been limping along with it for a while. The ON/OFF switch has become intermittent. If you have the patience and keep activating it multiple times, it MAY start up the unit. Once it is running it continues to run, but turn it off and you MAY or MAY NOT be able to start it up again.

I want to replace the switch under the plastic cover but how do you begin disassembling this machine?
